I am the artist and owner of Authentic Soul Studio, LLC. I create abstract and semi-abstract paintings in acrylics and mixed media on canvas and board in various sizes.
I have been an artist of about 20 years and am inspired by nature; be it atmosphere, light, weather, bold color, seasons, landscapes, found items, and breathtaking sights. I thoroughly enjoy sensing and interpreting perspectives and ideas through painting, color, mark-making, glazes, and contrasts.
My studio is located within the Artisan Forge Studios, 1106 Mondovi Rd, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Studio # 11. Here I create and display my art, as well as on my website www.authenticsoulstudio.com. My abstract work is inspired by the energy, beauty, emotion, and depth of an experience encountered; be it nature, poetry, song, texture, light, aging, energy, or anything that conjures aw. I love to work with ideas and colors and intuitively bring a particular aspect of my impression to life.
In my art, I use a variety of techniques, but what I love most is layers and layers of paint with glazing, texture, sanding. I love to add and subtract paint, make energetic marks and brushstrokes, play with the strength and subtlety of value and color, building upon previous layers so the history of the painting peeks through to the viewer.
I have studied with Louise Fletcher and Nicholas Wilton, respectively, who have taught me the joy of being in the moment with my authentic self to create art. I love to share this love through classes and open studios. I have had a one-woman exhibition at Artisan Forge Studios entitled "An Authentic Soul: The paintings of Susan Carew Johnson" in January 2021. I love to show and talk about my work.
